Lazy Men’s Guide to Looking Good

Because some people don’t have the time or the energy to be dandies.

Everyone knows how visual our society is.

Everyone knows people judge from the outside.

Everyone knows your look often defines your next step.

However, not everyone wants to put in the effort to look good, especially men.

The truth is you don’t need the routine of K-POP idols to look good. You just need some basic maintenance.

Understand basic fashion

If you don’t care about your clothes, that’s it. You can’t look good.

Handsome faces are only a small percentage of your overall look. The rest comes from styling. It is a fact that some people look good wearing whatever. What can you do? They won the genetic lottery.

We have to put some effort for us who didn’t win it and trust me it is not that demanding.

Clothes are the simplest. There are only two rules you have to obey.

Wear clothes that fit

Stop wearing baggy clothes or too tight of clothes (the latter is worse).

The reason is simple: not everyone can pull it off. You need a muscular body to pull off tight clothes, and you need a good overall body shape to pull of baggy clothes.

If you are lazy (I am lazy), wear a t-shirt and short pants, provided they fit perfectly. Trust me; this is enough to attract a few stares from strangers.

If you don’t want to buy new clothes, go to your nearest tailor and alter them. It only costs a few dollars, but it feels like an expensive upgrade.

Wear a watch

You need something on your wrist, be it a watch or bracelet. A plain wrist is unattractive.

You don't need to wear a Rolex to impress. Just wear a decent watch (not cheap) like Seiko. It is enough to complement your overall look.

The trick is to make sure your accessories don’t catch too much attention. Keep it lowkey; its role is to complement.

Use appropriate color combo

If you are not an art student, go with neutral colors: black, white, navy blue, brown, maroon.

Don’t wear eye-catching colors (if you don’t understand how) such as red, yellow, and green. Just don’t. Neutral colors are safe because they look good every time and can be matched with any color.

Don’t wear patterns

Avoid patterns; it is a double-edged sword.

Patterns are hard to get right because you need to make the pattern the center of your fashion. Everything else needs to follow the pattern. If you don’t, you will look like a 6th grader.

Instead of pattern, use plain, one color clothes. If you want more colors, put them on the other piece (pants, bags, hats, shoes).

Understand your body

It is always better to fix from the inside, i.e., your body, starting from hair to toes. Don’t worry; we don’t need a pedicure and manicure. You want a quick result; I give you quick fixes.

Use proper face soap

You don’t need too much for your face, and proper face soap is the basic, and for most, it is enough (if you want more, good for you). Understand your skin first before buying a face soap. Is it oily? Is it dry? Is it a mixture of both?

My face can be oily and dry (if you don’t have such type, you are lucky). Hence, I cannot target my problem. I can use mild face soap to make sure that my face is not that oily or that dry. I don’t need to have the perfect skin to look good. I am not a model or an actor.

If your skin is either dry or oily, get the soap that has the specialty. That’s it.

Use proper shampoo

Hair is your crown. Treat it like one.

Like your face, understand your hair type.

I used to use a strong shampoo that made my hair so dry. Once I switch to a milder one, my hair never looks better. If you are on the extreme spectrum, buy the specialty shampoo. If not, always, always pick the mild, normal one.

One quick tip: don’t use your shampoo every day; it damages your hair. Your hair needs a bit of oil coming from your scalp, and that is ok.

Have suitable haircut

People go to barbershops and pick the trending haircut. If you have a square face and try an oval haircut, it will look silly.

Go to google and type “know my face shape” to determine your face shape quickly. It is not difficult.

Once you know your face shape, you can search “haircut for X face shape.” It is also not difficult.

Trust me; a good haircut is a life changer.

Have suitable spectacles

If you don’t wear glasses, skip.

If you wear glasses, please, please use the ones that suit your face shape. You can always refer to google for the appropriate glasses for a certain shape.

Try them one by one. No need to be hurry to decide which frame you want; you will use it every day anyway.

Stand up straight

If you don’t stand up straight, you don’t respect yourself.

It is the most important thing. Without good posture, anything you put on will never make you look good.

When you stand up straight, you look taller, and everyone loves tall guys.

Trim your body hair

Just make sure that no hair is growing uncontrolled.

Hair, beard, and mustache are basic, and everyone knows they need to trim them. But I often see people with thick leg hair that is spiraling (literally) out of control.

If you wear short pants, you must trim your leg hair. You don’t need to shave it. Tame it.

Clip your nails

Just for basic hygiene, please.

That’s it. You don’t need to be a dandy to look good. You need to do basic maintenance. That would suffice, lazy men. The moment you start thinking about your look, you will realize that people respect you more (because you respect yourself).
